One of the company's major ambitions is to create the illusion of life while keeping the source of manipulation unknown to the viewer. To achieve this, it has developed a sensitive approach combining puppetry, cinema, new magic, and new technologies (it has notably received support from the CNC for the shows GIMME SHELTER and Nature Morte-Still Life). The artistic team strives to create the most perfect illusion in order to give the viewer an experience that is both disturbing and unique.
During a creation, a significant part of the preparation is devoted to research on the reliability of the movement and the autonomy of the creatures, made possible in particular by the new gateways created by 3D printers and robotics.

The Invisible Awakening research program was selected as one of 50 residency projects for the Villa Albertine's 2024 season. Three members of the Yôkaï Company were in research residency for two months in May and June 2024 in New York and Los Angeles.
Strongly inspired by the residence villas of creators, thinkers and cultural professionals such as the Villa Medici in Rome or the Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto, the Villa Albertine has been inaugurating a new chapter in the history of artistic residencies in the United States for four years by offering residents a personalized welcome and networking in the territory of their choice (emblematic cities such as New York, San Francisco, New Orleans, on the move or in natural spaces).
This setting was ideal for continuing the Invisible Awakening research project, the first part of which took place in New York and Los Angeles in September 2022. During this first trip, several members of the Yôkaï Company met with resource people in the field of invisible animation in cinema with the aim of adapting certain principles to hidden manipulation on theater stages.
The 2024 residency in New York allowed the development of the innovative Hidden TwinTM (trademark registered with the INPI) and the presentation of it to several puppeteers working in the fields of live performance and cinema. All approved the resolutely original nature of this prototype. It allows Violaine Fimbel to deploy her imagination in a new direction from 2024 by offering unique immersive experiences outside the walls of the theater and to participate in the renewal of the disciplines of puppetry and new magic.
VILLA ALBERTINE USA // MAI - JUIN 2024 Le programme de recherche Réveil Invisible a été retenu parmi les 50 projets de résidence sélectionnés dans le cadre de la saison 2024 de la Villa Albertine. Trois membres de la Compagnie Yôkaï étaient en résidence de recherche pendant deux mois en mai et juin 2024 à New York et Los Angeles. Fortement inspirée des villas de résidence de créateurs, penseurs et professionnels de la culture telles que la Villa Médicis à Rome ou la Villa Kujoyama à Kyoto, la Villa Albertine inaugure depuis quatre années aux Etats-Unis un nouveau chapitre dans l’histoire des résidences artistiques en proposant aux résidents un accueil et une mise en réseau sur mesure sur le territoire de leur choix (villes emblématiques telles New York, San Francisco, Nouvelle-Orléans, en itinérances ou en espaces naturels). Ce cadre était idéal pour poursuivre le projet de recherche Réveil Invisible dont un premier volet s’est déroulé à New York et Los Angeles en septembre 2022. Lors de ce premier voyage, plusieurs membres de la Compagnie Yôkaï ont rencontré des personnes ressources dans le domaine de l’animation invisible au cinéma dans le but d’adapter certains principes à la manipulation cachée sur les plateaux de théâtre. La résidence à New York en 2024 a permis de développer le dispositif innovant Jumeau cachéTM/Hidden twinTM(marque déposé auprès de l’INPI) et de le présenter à plusieurs marionnettistes évoluant dans le domaine du spectacle vivant et du cinéma. Tous ont approuvé le caractère résolument inédit de ce prototype. Il autorise Violaine Fimbel à déployer son imaginaire dans une nouvelle direction à partir de 2024 en proposant des expériences immersives singulières hors les murs du théâtre et de participer au renouvellement des disciplines marionnette et magie nouvelle.

US Research trip
From September 3 through September 4, five members of the company Yôkaï went on a research trip to the US to study commonalities in the field of invisible animation in film and theater. They met the team of creature supervisors from the Jim Henson’s Creature Shop in Los Angeles, creature designers and movie VFX artists as well as live performance puppeteers based in New York and Los Angeles.
